In Ghana, women are too often pushed to the margins by cultural bias and a shortage of visible role models. Fields like the arts and STEM are still framed as men's territory.
This work answers that. Her beauty, tenderness and elegance do not cancel out her competence. In her headwrap, a scientist at her microscope shows that these qualities belong together.
The headwrap is made from discarded tailors' offcuts. Fabric once considered worthless is given new value through art, just as women's contributions deserve to be recognised. Her cowry earrings carry the Ghanaian meanings of femininity, wealth and fertility.
The background looks like something that is still forming or under construction, representing a system that is unsupportive, but the figure comes out of regardless. The background has an inscription "STOP APOLOGIZING FOR YOUR FEMALENESS AND FEMINITY".
